Bennett Associates do not design “Flying Parts” we are not “Aerospace Designers”. However we do excel at solving the complex issues that abound with the forming and handling of large aerospace components for example wing skins for large commercial airliners.
Bennett Associates were responsible for the design and project management of the tooling and the associated handling for the A380 Wing Skin Creep Forming Facility at Broughton in North Wales as well as initial A350 facility handling designs for composite wing skins at Filton Bristol.
In both cases the wing skins involved were 30m in length and up to 6m wide. The tools upon which the skins are formed weighed up to 50 tonnes. Both the components and the tolling had to be accurately located within the various workstations.
The A380 tooling presented some timeframe issues with a need to greatly reduce the lead-time from the availability of the final aerodynamic data to wing skin production. An innovative modular design along with data processing ensured that the time constraints were met.
With Bennett Associates being able to bring their expertise of large moving structures from many other areas, bridges, steel manufacture, tunnelling etc Airbus took delivery of the facility on time and to budget.
