Environmental

Whilst 'Environmental' is nowadays seen as an industrial sector in its own right mechanical engineers work with the laws of physics and as such all designs have an effect on the environment.

Atkins, Rotherham approach all their projects with a view to limiting the effect that the design will have upon the environment.

Sometimes we design within the sector; Bennett Associates designed the UK’s first 1-megawatt wind turbine, we have carried out concept and feasibility studies for tidal and wave generators, designed and still are designing some of the most efficient aerobic digesters (household waste in – compost out).

Sometimes we can bring our skills to bear on the environmental effect of projects that are outside the sector. The Falkirk Wheel, a Millennium Project barge lift, has an innovative design that not only saves millions of gallons of water every year; it also only requires the energy of 6 electric kettles to rotate the 1500 tonne structure.

Atkins, Rotherham work with and for the Environment Agency on locks, weirs, flood sluice systems etc.
