The Atkins Movable Bridges team provides inspection, design, preparation of full manufacturing drawings and commissioning of the machinery, power hydraulic and electrical control systems.
Bennett Associates (originally founded in 1984) was acquired in 2008 by Atkins; bringing their proven technical expertise to the UK’s leading engineering consultancy. Bennett Associates acquired a highly respected profile within the engineering world for its involvement in movable bridges, footbridges and movable structures. We have a dedicated team of engineers with considerable knowledge and experience with a view to exchange information on their varied bridge projects.
Nick Cooper, BSc, CEng, FIMechE, FREng, Technical Director, leads the highly qualified bridge team. Nick is primarily known for his detailed design of the operating and rotating mechanism of the complex wheel structure and mechanical interfaces for the Falkirk Wheel, the world’s first rotating boatlift. Bennett Associates was awarded the Structural Steel Design Award for 2002, for its involvement with the Falkirk Wheel.
Other movable bridge projects that Bennett Associates were involved with include the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the Dutch River swing bridge in Goole, the Glasgow Science Centre bridge and the Lowry Centre footbridge in Manchester. They have also been involved in the Forth Road Bridge main cable dehumidification project.
