Bennett Associates Design Airbus A380 Wing Skin Creep Forming Facility

Continued...

A handheld data scanner prompts the operator through a sequence of 400 measuring points, identifies each panel by unique barcode and is then able to download all data for each panel direct to the A380 SQL server archive. As the panel data archive builds up, it will become possible in time to completely eliminate the bag weight check as the system will be capable of calculating this based on the data from previous panels.

From initial concepts to a production ready facility in under two years, and on a budget, is a major achievement, particularly taking into consideration that the final product was being developed in parallel, and that this is the first facility of its kind.

A concurrent engineering project of this size required that Airbus had a partner rather than a supplier and the solution of using the same team to design and project manage the whole creep forming facility has paid off handsomely in substantial cost and time savings. With the benefit of hindsight, those involved have doubts that this could have been achieved in any other way.
