A new marina is proposed as an important part of the
Barrow-in-Furness waterfront development project.
The existing marine access to the waterfront is via a large sea
lock designed for large ships and submarines which takes several hours to
negotiate and is expensive to operate.
A marina link has, therefore, been proposed to enable a fast, 24
hour access to the waterfront by pleasure craft up to 22m in length and with
drafts up to 2.8m.
The Marina Link will consist of 2 independent Travelling Locks
shuttling between a sea chamber at the coast of Walney Channel and a dock
chamber at the end of Anchorline Basin. Each travelling Lock will be designed to
carry a payload of 600t, consisting of water and floating marine craft (and
crew).
The travelling distance between the two chambers will be
approximately 250m via a single custom designed rail track with a passing
section provided by two sets of rail points. At the sea chamber and at the dock
chamber, the travelling locks will be lifted or lowered to their respective
water levels.
This design has been selected to offer the most secure and
reliable link to Barrow Docks with minimum cost and with a transfer time of less
than 20 minutes.
Bennett Associates has developed the design of the marina link
from feasibility study through to practical concept design in conjunction with
Royal Haskoning UK Ltd, as part of this important urban regeneration project.
A concept sketch of the project can be seen in the images to the
right.
