IMechE/ICE presentation on Goole Swing Bridge

Bennett Associates Engineer, James Hill will be speaking about the Dutch River Swing Bridge Replacement at a forthcoming Institution of Mechanical Engineers event. He will be speaking alongside Dave Lowther of Birse, John Mason of Mason Clark and Richard Langrick of Butterley Engineering.

This joint event between the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and Institution of Civil Engineers will discuss aspects of the design, procurement and construction of the award winning replacement swing bridge on the A161 over the ‘Dutch River’ in Goole.

The presentation will take place on 29th November 2007 at 6:00pm at Lecture Theatre 3, Frederick Mappin Building, University of Sheffield, Mappin Street, Sheffield S1 3JD. More information can be found on the ImechE website

The Dutch River Swing Bridge carries the A161 highway over the Dutch River and acts as a vital link between Old Goole and Goole. The replacement swing bridge has a moveable span measuring 45 metres long x 14 metres wide – one of the biggest to be built in the UK in recent years. A fixed approach pier on the south side, 12 metres in length, aligns with the nose of the moving section, and there is a shorter fixed pier on the north side. The pivot on the new bridge is positioned one-third of the distance from the tail, which has increased the navigable passage when the bridge is open to shipping from 11.5 metres to 15.2 metres, despite the increased width of the bridge deck.

In April 2007, the swing bridge replacement won a prestigious award from the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Yorkshire & Humber Region.
